SAY HELLO TO YOUR 2017-2018 BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES SOCIETY EXECUTIVES
Here's a bit about all of this year's executives. You can even search for a name or position using the box below, and please feel free to reach out to any of them any time!
Welcome to the family! As your society presidents for 2017-2018, Amelia and I hope to make you feel supported throughout your transition into, time during and departure out of the McMaster Biochemistry program. We plan to do so by being as efficient and accurate as RNA polymerase in transferring all things academic, social and career-related to you, the most exothermic group of students. With our Mac-nificient team and active communication with you, we wish to mirror the collaborative group effort of single-stranded binding proteins in helping one another out, whether it be answering any Biochemistry related questions or relieving some thesis and #unistruggles stress, through our yearly events. Feel free to contact me about anything ranging from sharing your cryogenic cool ideas for the society, expressing any concerns, chatting about courses (#orgogrind #stemies #welovefelicia), or pronouncing your passion for emojis!
Fortunately for me, I will be acting as your 2017-2018 Co-President alongside Ashley. We can’t wait to meet you at our Welcome Social, introduce you to the brilliant professors in our department at Meet the Profs, and see you dance your heart out at our Biochem Formal! Better yet, those are just 3 of the many academic, social, and career events that we have in store for you this upcoming year. Free coffee (or whatever you’re into) if you want to come talk to me about the society, what we can do for you, the BDC program, suggestions for a delicious food spot, your strange addictions and pet peeves, or well, anything, really.
Hi! I’m Sarah, and this year I’ll be your VP Administration! I’m so excited to meet you all and have a blast this upcoming year! I’ll be wearing a lot of hats (or lab coats?) at once, overseeing events and organizing meetings and socials in coordination with the other BBSS executives, profs and students! My goal is to integrate everyone’s strengths and ideas, and translate them into action, so that we can come up with new opportunities and events as a team. Feel free to message me anytime - whether you have questions regarding what's happening in the biochemistry/BDC world, about courses, or with any random cool ideas that come to mind!
Although I am entering the Biomedical Discovery & Commercialization program this year, my heart and soul will always belong to the BBSS! I will be working hard all year to communicate to the Biochem Fam all of the awesome events that the society has to offer. If you have any ideas on how we can better reach out to you or just want to share biochem puns, feel free to come up and talk to me at any time - I’m probably just thinking about corgis to be honest. Also, make sure to like us on Facebook (facebook.com/macBBSS/) and follow us on Instagram (@macBBSS) to keep up-to-date on all things BBSS! #shamelessplug
Hi, I'm Emma and I'm so excited to be your VP Academics this year along with Flavia! Our goal is to help you all become the best biochemists you can be by keeping you informed, providing you with a ton of opportunities and answering any and all questions! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or even if you just want to chat about life and grab a coffee!
Hey Everyone! I’m excited to be working together with Emma this year as your Academics VPs, and we’re here to keep you informed about everything academics related. We know that you’re Crazy In Love with Biochem, and we’ll make sure that out of your 99 Problems, academics won’t be one. If you have any questions or want to chat about anything thesis/research/profs/JayZ and Beyoncé related don’t hesitate to send me a message and I’ll be happy to help!
As VP Finance and fourth year biochemist, my job is to make sure that the only red you see is from your ethidium bromide stain. When I am not making it rain money for the BBSS; you can find me at my lab, the Pulse, taking a long walk on the beach, or contemplating whether or not Ross and Rachel were really on a break. Holla at me for biochemistry advice, help with your taxes, or to learn how to effectively procrastinate for midterms.
“I heard that Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Society swag is as sweet as glycolysis” p=0.0001, n=McMaster Biochemistry student body. My goal is to supply you guys with the most stylish and desirable attire throughout the school year so that you are all frequently cited by people across campus for looking as elegant as perfectly separated bands on a gel. I am looking forward to incorporating your input on designs and making you proud to represent your program. Feel free to message me regarding swag ideas, sleep deprivation survival tips, or wood characteristics.
As your VP Careers, I want to help you discover what your future holds for you and determine your next step after Mac. Throughout the year I will be working towards providing you with opportunities to explore the different paths in academia, industry and many more. By the end of the year, I hope to leave you with a feeling of excitement for what will come next after you have graduated. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have, I am at your service and happy to help!
Biochemistry is defined as the science of life, so as the VP External for the BBSS, I'm here to guarantee that every aspect of your life is somehow related to our wonderful program. From volunteer to sports, make sure you throw away those centrifuges, because we'll be incorporating a little bit of biochem into anything and everything.
Hey, I’m Alexia and I am entering my third year in Biochemistry. As one of your VPs Social for this year, I am extremely excited to plan some awesome events for you guys to attend and (PCR) amplify your social circles. The BBSS events will be super litmus, so make sure you guys take a break from studying to come out and enjoy yourselves. If you have any suggestions for future events or any comments, feel free to email me!
Biochemists, do you want to have fun this year? With the help of the other VP socials as well as myself, there will be many events available to do so. Grab all of your necessary biochem puns, and stay tuned for some wild times! As one of your VP socials, it is my goal to create an amazing environment within the biochemistry department, after all of the hard work in the lab is done. Outside of the lab, you can find me singing in a few choirs, or skiing down some slopes. If you have any tips or suggestions for future social events, feel free to message me!
Hi! My name is Justyna, and this year I'll be one of your VP Broteins, running the mentoring program along with my friend Tim. We all know that second year can be tough (UGHHH orgo), so we'll be pairing (restriction enzymes? Luckily no) our freshest biochemists with upper years that are offering to lend a helping hand socially, academically, etc. There are various Brotein events throughout the year, so be on the lookout for them! Outside of BBSS, you'll still probably find me with Tim - either in HSL, getting shushed in lecture, or gossiping about research @ Mac (#bffgoals)
Hi!! I’m Timothy, and along with Justyna I’ll be one of your VP Broteins, running the mentorship program for all the incoming second years! We’ll be pairing the new second year with upper year mentors to act as chaperonins helping them transition from linear unorganized first years into perfectly folded tertiary structures… I mean second years. We’ll be planning lots of social, academic, and other exciting Brotein all year long, so GET HYPED!!! Outside of the BBSS, you’ll find me panicking in HSL, walking around campus talking about how much I love The Holy Trinity (Felicia, Shari and Vivian), or with Justyna getting shushed in lecture.
I will be responsible for creating the hype material surrounding all of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Society events this upcoming school year! I promise to elevate your cytokine levels due to excitement and deliver important information regarding the events in a fun and interactive way! That aside, if you want someone to talk to regarding those dang PCR that just won’t work or how you can best utilize the greatest life science specialization as a stepping stone towards your career paths, feel free to message me! (You will probably see me roaming MDCL or hogging a room to myself).
